FALLS OF ROUGH , Ky. – Rough River Dam State Resort Park will be busy on Sept. 11 with two special events – one on land and the other in the air.

The cleanup, hosted by Friends of Rough River Lake, will begin at 8 a.m. CDT and the festivities will wrap up around 2:30 pm. Grand prizes will include travel packages, golf packages and a Schwinn bicycle. The park needs your help to make Rough River Lake a cleaner place to visit!

For those of you who are not going
to the 100th
Anniversary campout the weekend of October
15th, see the note below.
This was presented at Roundtable.
As a former Scout and now a philanthropy worker for homeless causes, it was
interesting to sit through your last Monthly Scouting Roundtable at Immanuel
Chruch. I appreciated meeting some of you. You may recall I spoke briefly
about opening a downtown homeless Day Center. Currently, Lexington's homeless
have very few options in the daytime except hanging out in Phoenix
Park, other public parks, public buildings such as the Central
Library, and the sidewalks. I chair a Christian
Homeless Charity called Sleepless In Lexington. Sleepless In Lexington is an
organization of business and church leader volunteers who identify the most
needed homeless project each year and raise money to support it. This year's
project I spoke about at Round
Table is the Day Center.
I am requesting each of you to consider bringing a group of your
Scouts as "Sleepers" to Applebee's on
Saturday Night, October 16th in support of opening the Day Center.
Scout Sleepers can sleep in sleeping bags or elect to build their own
Cardboard Shelter. The box shelters will be arranged into a
"Cardboard City". Prizes will be awarded for the best Cardboard
Shelters. There is not a monetary charge for Sleepers or Leaders like
yourself who bring them to Applebee's. Much like the Walkathon
concept, we do ask each Sleeper to obtain a minimum of 10 adult
"Sponsors" who will pledge a minimum of $10 each in support of
their youth Sleeper. I
t is a meaningful exercise for youth to experience a little of what homeless
go through 24/365 and to experience some "entrepreneurship" in
convincing Sponsors to contribute to a righteous cause. We call it the "10
to get 10" approach so that each Sleeper obtains 10 Sponsors who
each contribute $10 minimum each. Thus, each Sleeper will raise a minimum
of $100 for the downtown homeless Day Center. On the night of the October 16th
event we will award a new laptop computer to the youth Sleeper who has
gotten the most Sponsors and a new laptop computer to the youth who
raises the most total money. We also have great Christian band
entertainment, inspirational speakers, and group games with prizes. An actual
homeless group of "actors" called the Street Voice Council trained
by the Downtown Actors Guild will even put on a live production called "Don't
Call Me Homeless, I Don't Call You Homed".
I am not asking you to fully commit to bringing Sleepers at this point, but if
you are interested please just reply to this email, call me at 859-699-2500
or email me at sapolston1@aol.com.
I have attached a color poster for you convenience in addressing this with
your Scouts.

OA FALL ORDEAL
JAMBOREE
(1) The
Council has LOTS of open youth slots for the National Jamboree in
2010. As I understand it, any boy (1st Class and 12 years old) at the
time of the Jambo
that wants to go, is in! They have the cost down to $1600 ... still
seems alot, but remember it's a two-week trip and a once-in-a-lifetime
experience. You can find out more about it at http://www.bsajambo
ree.org/. Our own Dan
Miller is going as (I think) a Scoutmaster,
so he may have some additional details for us. I'm not too clear about
opportunities for adults to go with their sons. The Council staff is
already selected, but I understand that one can still apply for a National
staff position - or possibly camp (or stay in a hotel) seperately and attend
the Jambo on day passes. I'll try to get more info. If anyone is
interested in going, please let me know ASAP. The council will need a
$100 deposit for any boys that want to go by about May 1, so we don't have
much time to decide.
GLADIE CABIN FORESTRY PROJECT November 20 I want to pass along a message to our KyBCHA groups to let them know about the details of a work day we have planned this fall. Please advise your group that we are going to do a non horse work day picking up trash out of the NADA tunnel and if time allows along the road to the Gladie Visitor center (Red River Gorge Area) as well on November 20. This project came out of a meeting that Dennis Blackburn and I had with Tim Eling and the lady who runs the visitor center at Gladie (her name escapes me) a couple of months ago. Elaine Wilson with Tourism in Frankfort is the one who pulled this meeting together to discuss LNT (Leave No Trace) projects. I supposes that we need to go ahead and make some detailed plans and I will make a stab at do that. How about we figure on 10:00 (for those of us that will be traveling from a good distance) at the Gladie visitor center and we will go from there. The Forest Service has agreed to offer traffic control while we are in the tunnel. Tell everyone that they need to bring tools and trash bags with them to work with. I am assuming the Forest Service will have a place for us to place the trash that is picked that day. I talked to Buck Winburn this morning and advised him of these plans and he plans to email this to his group (Red River Gorge BCHA) when he checks his email which is about once every three weeks. Thanks for listening and please pass this along to anyone else that has any interest in helping. Roy M. Cornett Cornett & Associates 126 E. PHILMONT
(2) Philmont. Normally, our next opportunity for Philmont would
be 2011, but I've been offered up to 2 crews for June 24-July 6, 2010!
(No we don't have field whole crews.) If you're 1st Class and 14 years
old by these dates and want to do Philmont, speak NOW! (Adults TOO!
We can wave the 1st Class requirement for YOU.) Here's the catch:
You have to commit NOW and put in a $100 deposit by May 1. Deadline
for saying, "I want to go!" is April 14.
(3) Philmont (Part 2.) Due to attrition, we have ONE spot
left on our Troop 73 2009 Philmont crew. If you want to go and didn't
get selected on the 1st-pass, speak NOW - it can happen!
(4) Troop Calendar:
* Tuesday, March 17 - Scoutmaster Conferences and Board-of-Reviews
ONLY. Those scouts that need SM Conferences and BORs,
need to contact me ASAP - so far I know of only 3 scouts that need these.
I need at least 3 Committee Members to cover the BORs, so please
check with Tammi and/or Pete Michl to see if you need to attend.
